THE POWER OF AN AWARENESS FAST

An Upward Reset

As we stand at the threshold of a new year, there's profound value in pausing to recalibrate our spiritual compass. The beginning of 2026 invites us to consider a compelling question: Are we truly walking in alignment with the divine purpose set before us? If not, are we ready for an upward reset?

Walking Worthy of Our Calling

The concept of "walking worthy of the upward calling" is more than religious jargon—it's an invitation to live intentionally, embracing the highest version of ourselves that God envisions. This calling is about actively stepping into the fullness of who we were created to be.

The Spiritual Discipline of Fasting

In our culture of constant consumption, fasting offers a countercultural practice that makes space for God. It’s not about showcasing willpower; it’s about drawing closer to God by letting go of comforts that often occupy the space He longs to fill. As we set aside food, entertainment, or other pleasures, we create a holy hunger in our souls.

Fasting combined with prayer enhances our faith and reliance on God. As Jesus taught in Mark 9:29, some breakthroughs require this powerful combination. Together, they foster deeper spiritual experiences and true communion with God.

Making Your Calling Sure

Our January theme, "Making Your Calling and Election Sure," underscores God's specific purpose for each of our lives, both general and unique. In the noise of daily life, this calling can become unclear. An "upward reset" allows us to refocus and affirm our divine mission, ensuring we start the year with a strong foundation aligned with God’s will.

The Role of Humility

Ephesians 4:1-2 teaches that walking worthy involves humility and kindness. True elevation in the spiritual life comes through the humility of fasting, where we acknowledge our dependence on God. Pride keeps us grounded, but humility lets us soar.

The Power of Persistent Prayer

Luke 18:1 reminds us to always pray and not give up. Persistent prayer aligns our hearts with God’s will, refining our desires and strengthening our faith. When combined with fasting, prayer becomes a catalyst for spiritual growth.

Holistic Wellness: Body, Mind, and Spirit

3 John 1:2 reveals God's care for our entire being—physical, mental, and spiritual. A structured fast can break unhealthy habits and encourage better lifestyle choices, helping to heal and reset our bodies while creating spiritual space for God.

The Journey Ahead

Our 21-day fast requires planning and discipline. Progressively releasing certain foods while keeping spiritual focus allows for gradual adjustment. It's about becoming more aware of God, more attuned to His voice, and more sensitive to His work.

Daily Scripture reading and devotional engagement feed our spirits while physical intake is restricted. This exchange underscores the heart of fasting: surrendering one kind of nourishment for a richer, essential kind.

A Personal Journey with Public Impact

Although our fast is a community effort, it remains deeply personal. The private transformation that occurs will eventually radiate outward, impacting others not through broadcast but through genuine, visible change.

Setting the Trajectory

The start of a new year is an opportunity to set a trajectory. Our choices in these early days set patterns for the entire year. Beginning 2026 with focused prayer and fasting declares a year of spiritual growth, walking worthy of our calling, and prioritizing our relationship with God over convenience.

May this season of fasting bring profound insight, transformation, and clarity about our purpose. The upward path awaits.
