Spotlight on Venessa
Welcome to TP Concept!
On September 1, 2025, we proudly launched TP Concept, a blog dedicated to enriching spiritual growth and fostering community engagement at Turning Point Church. Led by my wife, Lady Bangura, and me, we will explore biblical insights, key faith-based topics, practical applications for everyday life, event highlights, powerful testimonies, and much more from our community. To kick off our first official blog post, we are excited to feature Venessa Owen as our inaugural spotlight candidate. Here's her inspiring story.
My name is Venessa Owen, and I am currently serving as the Youth Leader at Turning Point Church (TPC). I've been a part of TPC for over 20 years, and during that time, my faith journey has evolved in many ways. I participated in the youth ministry and was a member of a dance group called Alpha Omega, under the leadership of Dr. Pastor Neal Walker. Those early experiences were essential in strengthening my connection to the church and allowed me to form lasting friendships with others in my age group.
In addition to my church involvement, I graduated from Salisbury University with a master's degree in social work. This education has equipped me with tools to support our youth and community effectively, reinforcing the values of empathy and service that are central to my faith.
Like many, my faith story isn't unique, but it is deeply personal. As I grew older, I began to explore my faith through my own perspective, discovering what spirituality meant to me as an individual. Although I wasn't as actively involved in church when I went off to college, I always returned to visit, carrying the memories of those formative years.
Over the past two years, I've experienced a significant shift in my life that pulled me back to church. Initially, I resisted that pull as life became busy, and I wasn't sure how to reconnect. However, in the last few months, something within me has shifted profoundly. I realized that I wanted to grow spiritually and serve in a deeper way, so I took the initiative to answer that call.
Life has come full circle for me, as I currently joyfully participate in the Dance and Banners Ministry alongside my two daughters. This has become a meaningful way for us to bond and express our faith together. Additionally, I serve in other ministries, including Fellowship and Ushering, further deepening my involvement and commitment to the church community.
Outside of church, my life revolves around my two daughters, Aubree (11) and Maira (3). We spend our weekends engaging in various activities together, and I am a gymnastics mom, which fills my weekdays and weekends with practices and training sessions. I enjoy making chocolate-dipped desserts, spending quality time with my family, and reading novels in my free time. I am also a proud native of Jamaica, which adds a rich cultural perspective to my life experiences.
Turning Point Church has always held a special place in my heart for my spiritual growth and sense of community. Whether through fellowship or service, I have always found a home here. Turning Point has a unique way of making everyone feel like part of a family, offering a sense of belonging and care that is deeply intimate. It's a place where you can truly feel seen, heard, and welcomed with open arms.
