The Strength to Let Go

The Strength to Let Go

Finding Freedom in Surrender:

Fasting is a practice that goes against what we often hear in today's world. Society tells us to always want more, achieve more, and control more. But when we choose to step back through fasting, we're challenging those messages about what success and security really mean.

When we fast, especially by giving up foods we enjoy, we're not just changing our diet. We're making it clear that our true sustenance comes from God. We're recognizing a truth our culture tends to ignore: we're not the ones keeping everything together.

Many of us go through our days believing we're in control of our success. We work hard, plan, and solve problems. We build careers and manage our homes. But sometimes, we start to believe it all depends on us.

This belief is not only tiring; it's also spiritually risky. Thinking we're in control can stop us from looking to God for help. We might forget how much we depend on the One who gives us life, opportunities, and strength.

Fasting is like pressing a "pause button" on this mindset. It creates space to realize that our achievements, strength, and life itself are gifts from God, not things we made happen on our own. Every time we choose a plant-based meal during a fast, it's a reminder of this truth.

The apostle Paul talks about walking in humility and gentleness in Ephesians 4:1-2. These qualities aren't celebrated much in today's competitive world. Humility can sound like weakness, and gentleness might seem ineffective.

But Paul's words offer a new idea of strength—one that's not about control but about recognizing our need for God and others. Fasting is a way to practice this humility. It's about letting go of the need to control everything.

Today, we're not just giving up meat. We're letting go of the tiring belief that everything relies on us.

Looking for a job or dealing with job uncertainty can bring out our deepest worries. It can make us feel anxious and desperate. But what if this time is actually a chance to see God provide in real ways? What if closed doors are to keep us from paths that aren't right for us?

Today, we pray for those seeking employment or career clarity. We ask God to open doors and provide for those facing financial difficulties. This is about active faith—working hard but ultimately trusting in God's provision, not just our efforts.

Career resources can help in job searches, but our ultimate hope is in God who knows our needs even before we ask.

Broken relationships can really hurt us. Whether it's a family conflict or a struggling friendship or marriage, relational pain can take over our thoughts.

Interestingly, fasting can soften our hearts. When we're physically vulnerable, our defenses lower. We see our own faults and become more willing to forgive others.

Today, we pray for healing in our strained family ties and friendships. We ask for God's "peace that passes understanding" to mend what's broken. This peace allows us to handle tough relationships with wisdom and hope. It assures us that God can change hearts and restore trust.

Seeking biblical advice can offer practical steps in tough relationships. But the best advice needs the Holy Spirit's work to truly transform hearts, including our own.

Let's be real: starting a fast is tough. The hunger and low energy are real. The bigger challenge, though, is avoiding distractions. It's tempting to fill the empty space left by fasting with other activities rather than God's presence.

We need God's strength to stick to our spiritual goals. Discipline comes from a deep desire to know God better, finding nourishment in His Word rather than in physical food.

This is where fasting becomes transformative. When we push through and find that we can live—and even thrive—without what we thought we needed, we learn about God's sufficiency. We discover that He is truly enough.

Spiritual practices work best with practical routines. Stay hydrated during your fast. Take time to pause and refocus on scripture throughout the day. These aren't rigid rules but habits that make space for God to work within us.

Whether you feel energized or tired, remember that spiritual growth often happens best in community. We're not meant to face these challenges alone. There's strength in knowing others are on the same journey, experiencing the same struggles and God's faithfulness.

Keep going. The discipline you practice today shapes you—deeper trust, stronger faith, and a more surrendered heart. God is working in ways you might not see yet, but His provision is real, His presence steady, and His plans good.

The strength to let go isn't weakness. It's the path to true freedom.

Indeed fasting is a challenge, but as the article says, it also brings you closer to God. It helps you build and strengthen your relationship with God. I cannot tell you how many times I have called on Him for strength when the coffee headaches start.

nI have found myself more focused and deep in thoughts about this life and my walk with God. What I need to change to grow as a Christian.
